Subject: TRY THE ACTIVESYNC HELP FILE

I know that this forum is old, but it is still active. As a matter of fact, I came across the same problems all of you had and hoping I would find the answer or solution to the Activesync connectivity problems.
True, you could be connected with Activesync (I tried versions 3.0, 3.1, up to 3.71 and now 3.8) and they all gave me the same problems like everyone is experiencing. Works for two to three days, then, it goes dead only allows you to connect as Guest.
Lacking the help anywhere as I was determined to use this platform as my PDA, having tried a notebook, a tablet pc and several pocket pc's, I realized that the real workhorse is this Handheld sized pc. But without Activesync?
Herrera's site was informative but we all have been there, done that. Other internet info were either too cryptic or doesn't really address the problem. Even the HP site. I then went and pressed "F1" while the Activesynce window open and I got the solution we all have been chasing.
The problem seems to be that Jornada 720 does not communicate or send it's PIM identification while you are trying to sync with the desktop. And when it connects, the desktop figures your handheld has already been syncing with other computer so it won't allow you to set up another syncing strategy with this one (eventhough that is the only computer you have been working with. The way I solved this is:
1. Uninstall Activesync from the control panel's Add and Remove Programs.
2. Disconnect the cable from your Handheld 720.
3. Backup your Handheld data (seriously, especially if you have a lot of important information in it.
4. Do a COLD BOOT on your Handheld 720 after backing up the data.
5. Install Activesync to your desktop
6. Turn on your Handheld 720
7. Run Activesync in your desktop
8. Connect your Handheld to the serial sync cable(it will fail to sync as it will initially try to sync with the USB port)
9. Click your Handheld's START -> PROGRAMS -> COMMUNICATIONS -> PCLink
10. Almost at the same time Click on your DESKTOP PC's Activesync programs FILE -> GET CONNECTED (This is tricky, you may click the 720 first before the DESKTOP, if any error messages show up on the Handheld, just click it out and click the PCLINK
NOTE:
a) Main thing is that either or both PCLINK or even ACTIVESYNC on your Handheld has to be running to beckon the Activesync of your Desktop PC.
b)The Communication's setting (from your Handheld's control panel) has to be set correctly (CLICK: START -> SETTINGS --> (double click on) COMMUNICATIONS) Click the PC Connection TAB and CLICK the command button CHANGE to "SERIALPORT @ 57600" - That seems to be the only one that works
Good Luck. If you have a problem or those who are not technically inclined, email me.

I forgot to mention one very important thing:
While your DESKTOP PC is ringing trying to sync, cancel it's sync effort by clicking on the CANCEL BUTTON (DUH!)before your PCLink on your Handheld finishes trying to sync (it finishes after 6 tries by default), you should hear the connecting sound and your desktop will ask you if you want to ESTABLISH A PARTNERSHIP. VOILA!!
Then restore your data.

I loved my Jornada for the first 6 months--until the day that activesync became a problem. Too frustrated to deal with the issue, I put it aside for several months. A couple of weeks ago I decided to give it another try and I'm near the end of my rope. Here are the basics--Windows XP home edition; Activesiync removed and reinstalled (3.8) a couple of times now; the 678 error appears about half the time; my laptop never recognizes the Jornada--I've tried both serial and USB links; I've tried the timing-related solution several times; I've been through most of the recommendations on Chris De Herrera's site. I don't have enough confidence in my skills to mess with anything related to "BIOS" or "registry." Has anyone found a relatively easy fix for this problem?
Anyone wanna swap for a Dana Wireless?

Don't get desperate! You like me have a very good product!
I didn't try with Active Sync 3.8 but I'm almost sure that latest versions of ActiveSync won't take into account olden goldies. Use the previous one. Active Sync 3.7.1. I never succeded with USB in the 5 years I own a Jornada 720. Use the serial cable.
Contact me if you continue to have problems.

Hey people, here is a VERY GOOD link with screen shots on how to install the activesync (active synch) 3.8:
http://www.cewindows.net/faqs/activesync/activesync3.8.htm
It is true that lots of jornada forums and info on the net is old or way outdated sometimes. But, it has been a bless for me and I guess lots of people since most of the times, they are the only information available. I guess it kind of makes Hewlett Packard thinks if they really want to keep turning off all the loyal jornada warriors out there. Now that HP is going back to the drawing table to find out THEY ALREADY HAD the perfect formula in 2000, the less they could do is to show some respect for us and give us more support. Public Relations with your old customers is a very important part of marketing. I have 3 weeks with my "new" Jornada and I am as pleased as I can be. Productivity is much better than with any other Handheld or PDA that I have seen. Even compare to my boose's "super" Sony clie. Great toy but no production putting it side by side with my Jornada 720. Mine does the same or better since it has a large 640x480 screen and full keyboard. For those out there starting on Jornada's, let me tell you that a full keyboard IS A MAJOR ADVANTAGE compared to PDA's. PCMCIA high storage cards with lots of space to travel with movies or any data is something else, and I kind of feel sick to admit that, being a Microsoft based device (windows CE), everything connects and works better. Until Apple strikes back.... I guess the iPod will be much more in the future, but that's another topic. Today is february 13, 2005. In years to come this will one of those old email in a lost thread forum.... but for whoever is worth, I hope it helps.

Hope this helps.

I realize these past emails are several years old but i have loved using the HP Jornada 720 and purchased used copies to replace an older one. Despite numerous efforts I have been unable to synchronize with my newer DELL with windows XP but it continues to work with my older DELL that has windows 98. Is there any fix for this problem? Any help or advice appreciated. The troubleshooting guidelines did not work. Thanks for any help.
