Ethernet difficulty

I recently acquired an ethernet PC card for my Vadem Clio C-1000. WinCE recognizes the card and let me set up the IP address and whatnot. It seems to be talking with the card -- the send/receive light does the blinky thing when trying to access the network -- but I can't connect to anything on the LAN (This is just a local network -- no outside connection. Two Windows PCs which can talk to each other fine, sometimes a Linux box which similarly has no difficulty); ActiveSync fails to connect to the partner PC, I can't access the other systems using the \\ notation, or connect to the local web server. The other machines get request timed out when trying to ping the Clio.
Any suggestions/advice?
